Where are you going? - Repetition

Happy Friday and poem writing. Yesterday, we read  Son de negros cuba and discussed the use of repetition and imagery. You had time to write your own version of a poem with repetition and surrealist imagery. Today, I want you to publish that poem in a comment.

First: re-read Lorca's poem: Son de negros cuba (this translation is a bit different, maybe more accurate)

Second: re-read your poem. Do you have repetition? Do you have a mix of literal and surrealist imagery? Have you removed abstractions (love, paradise, etc)? Be specific in your poem. Name that love or name paradise, name the bird, name the ocean. Yesterday, Angela read her poem aloud and she didn't simply write island plants, she wrote plumeria. Patrick C.  didn't just write bird, he wrote finch.

Third: type your poem into a Word document, spell-check, and format your poem the way you want it o be seen, and read. Then, paste it into a comment. Be sure to leave your name for credit.

If you are interested in reading more poetry by Lorca:

One day I’ll meet my other half,
    I’ll go to Alaska.
Mountains dipped in clouds of memories,
    I’ll go to Alaska.
Listen to the silence that fills you with sounds,
    I’ll go to Alaska.
I will breathe the warmth of the ice sinking in my skin,
    I’ll go to Alaska.
As the artist paints his truths in the sky,
    I’ll go to Alaska.
People wrapped in fur, hiding behind trees talking to the cold, “No more please!”
    I’ll go to Alaska.
One day I’ll meet my other half underneath the black snow,
    I will go to Alaska.

  2. Nowhere here.
    By: Taylor Oliver

    I’ll go to Tahiti,
pistachio’s melting in the sun’s arms.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
blades of crab stab my feet.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
    Glass shatters on white linens.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
    Swarming bodies shimmer.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
    Dark fingers pierce the blue.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
    Orange peel vision.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
    A million eyes blinking above.
    I’ll go to Tahiti,
    Consciousness melts.

  3. I’ll go to Sicily
    Muddy feet walking along
    I’ll go to Sicily
    With aromas filling the air
    I’ll go to Sicily
    Salt spraying my face
    Similarly with the journey there
One day I’ll go to Sicily
    Bougainvillea vines snaking up buildings
    I’ll go to Sicily
    To feel the warmth
    I’ll go to Sicily
The Baby Grand and the Stradivarius in peaceful harmony
    I’ll go to Sicily
Wind swaying, flowers falling, family including
    One day I’ll go home.

  4. Poem: Tan cercas

El mar durmiendo, mientras yo lo observo
    Iré a La Paz
El sonido del viento y las palmeras bailando es una perfecta melodía
    Iré a La Paz
La brisa y las frutas tropicales es el aroma de un nuevo lugar
    Iré a La Paz
La gente catando y danzando es el amor que le tiene a este lugar
    Iré a La paz
Peces nadando y besando tus pies dentro del mar
    Iré a la Paz
Tan cerca y tan lejos la vez, con solo volar correr al asía el sur,
    ¡Llegare a La Paz!

  5. I decided to change a couple words

    I'm driving up north
    Crystal clear and tinted blue
    I'm driving up north
Freezing soft in an empty box
    I'm driving up north
To see a part of me I forget
    We're driving up north
Forgetting home as we lay in the pines
    Up north
    Prickly green bleeds onto brown
    I'm driving
No screens my eyes can squeeze
    We're living up north
    Family cooking and unmade beds
    We're driving
    light headed captain black tickle
    I'm driving up north

El cielo reflejando en el mar, pintando un abismo
    Iré a San Juan
Isla del caribe, volátil en fuego, animales en su túnica.
    Iré a San Juan
    Bella luna con ojos gigantes.
    Iré a San Juan
Susurrando a los oídos de los niños.
    Iré a San Juan
El mar bailando, la arena llamando
    Iré a San Juan
    Comida ardiente, la gente siente.
    Iré a San Juan
    Las nubes llenas de algodón.
    Iré a San Juan
Mis hijos irán y los de ellos visitaran.
Iré a mi tierra Puerto Rico.

  7. Popcorn ears and a shaking plane
    I'm off to Hawaii
Pillow like clouds and drops of golden sun
    I'm off to Hawaii
A warm salty breeze kissing my face
    I'm off to Hawaii
Hundred dollar charge to check a board,
The price we pay to go to Hawaii
A false aloha and nothing but a haole
    I'm off to Hawaii
Sinking like rocks the main lander learns to surf
    I'm off to Hawaii
    Warm water every day
    I'm off to Hawaii
Angry line ups and the sharks taking my waves
    I'm off to Hawaii
The forest grows thick, no other place I'd rather be
    I'm going to Hawaii again

    I’m going to school
Looking outside dazing off in the sky
    I’m going to school
Reflection off the water makes it seem like I am looking way high

Looking at the seagulls wishing I could fly
    I’m going to school

    I'm going to Washington
Enjoy life, cool breeze pass me
    I'm going to Washing

    I'm going to Washington
The Goldfinch are as pretty as gold.
    I'm going to Washington
Carduelis tristis are as free as clouds
    I'm going to Washington
A place where Ursus arctos horriblis live freely.
    I'm going to Washington
Oh the wilderness of a glooming world.
    I'm going to Washington
I'll swim, I'll run, I'll climb just to get to Washington.
    I'm off to Washington

A light I’ve seen but never touched
    I’ll go to the moon
On top a rocket ship and although tough
    I’ll go to the moon
Like Swiss cheeses eyes in the sky
    I’ll go to the moon
Swimming through space as my feet lift me high
    I’ll go to the moon
I’ll be that black dot on a canvas of white
    I’ll go to the moon
Floating from each star in sight
    I’ll go to the moon
Through the sky into outer space
    I’ll go to the moon
I only dreamed of this quiet place
Once day, I’ll go to the moon

  11. Hawaii…..
    by Ruth Vazquez

A piece of land filled with greens
    Where colors and heleconia
The head of a bird in a flower are found
One day I’ll go to Hawaii
    Skin kissed by the sun
    On the way to Maui,
And waves crashing on the sea shore
One day I’ll go to Hawaii
In the festival I will dance
    Watch the Hula and
Listen to the precious voice of the people
One day I’ll go to Hawaii
    Hips moving back and forth
With a stomp and a clap
One day I’ll go to Hawaii
I will stay to watch an ahinahina bloom
    Or maybe even two
One day I’ll go to Hawaii.

i want to see breathtaking water that wavy endless among the ocean shores
    I’ll go to the Bahamas
I want to see a sunset look like a mass of colors gone wild like a little child throw them together.
    Ill go to the Bahamas
As I set under the palm tree drink my tropical fusion of red grapefruit, pineapple juice with a hint of coconut
    Ill go to the Bahamas
Then walking on the beach feeling the wind blow through my hair like someone standing beside me blowing lightly
    Ill go to the Bahamas
As the guys with the funny accents tells me all I need to know
    I’ll go to the Bahamas
When I get there ill wiggle my toes into the sand
Once I get to the Bahamas

    I’ll go to Venice.
The telephone poles sticking out of the water, for boats to dock.
    I’ll go to Venice.
Taxi boats zoom through the narrow passageways, under bridges and around other swift vessels.
    I’ll go to Venice.
The mixture of tourists, armed with their fanny packs filled with excitement, and Italians enjoying the quatro formaggio cuisine.
    I’ll go to Venice.

Like a never ending forest no civilization

    I’m going to Parris Island

Oh, the yelling of the DI’s at your face,
Like dogs barking at its prey
    I’m going to Parris Island

    I’m going to Parris Island

When the sound of the planes
Is the only sound of freedom
    I’m going to Parris Island

    I’m going to Parris Island

    Our flag flying high,
    Our freedom still in hand
    I’m going to Parris Island

My face first in the mud,
Blood tears falling down my cheek

Traveling hours on desolate roads of pavment,
    until the sun goes dim,
    the city shines its brightest,
when the moon illuminates the sky,
but the light that the moon emits, looks dull
    in comparison,
to the extravagent city of lights,
    at night,illumination caresses the stars,
    at day, the sun,
    paints an intense watercolor above,
that drips upon the people below it, outside,
    the extravagent city of lights,
the potent aroma of tobbaco stains my clothes,
the taste of coffee beans, fills the air,
in the extravagent city of lights,
the green essence haunts every room,
    the burning of incense,
    water trickling on burgandy stones,
in the extravagent city of lights,
evaporating whine, sweet like cheese cake,
the tart taste of of lime,
    the shine of black amethyst,
the vibrant blue of lapiz lazuli,
all these traits create the personality of,
    the extravagent city of lights

I’ll go to Honolulu, Hawaii that's the place I want to visit, see the trees like tall guards
    with swords and shields. This is that my dream of visiting Honolulu Hawaii happens;
    I’ll go to Honolulu Hawaii,
in the moonlight multi-colored parrots, peacocks and Red Vented Bul Bul,
Spotted Dove Japanese White Eye singing,
a delightful sound that rises you from your sleep to listen and enjoy,

in darkness stars are seen, because in darkness
you see what you will and of what might happen
and in darkness you dream, dream of past present
    I’ll go to Honolulu Hawaii,
the actuality of what’s to happen in the on coming future is unnerving.
And when the fear of losing yourself in a dream washes
you away and the moon is all you see,
    I’ll go to Honolulu Hawaii,

there is a clear net full of knots and cord like ropes for the small
bright yellow fish or the stars in the sea.

    Fresh baked cookies
    Cold glass of milk
    Supper on the table
    a kiss on the cheek
    I'm at your mama's house
    A foot rub
    A rub a dub dub
    I'm at your mama's house
    A smile on my face
    a smile on hers
    I'm at your mama's house
    My favorite show
    The smell of cookie dough

ah Blud! I cant feel my face,
    I wanna go home

When the plane lands you’ll know,
    I’m in Japan.
    With mountains of green,
    I’m in Japan.
    Among the shrines,
    I’m in Japan.
Down into the city with no limits,
    I’m in Japan.
Fish so fresh you can taste the Pacific Ocean,
    I’m in Japan.
    Kind people with respect,
    I’m in Japan.
And when the darkness falls, you’ll know,
    I’m in Japan.
Lanterns and neon lights set ablaze,
    I’m in Japan.
To see the rain fall around you,
    I’m in Japan.
    Sweet pink cherry blossom trees,
    I’m in Japan.
    With deep sea serenades,
    I’m in Japan.
    Enlightening all of your senses,
    I’m in Japan.
    From Tokyo to Kyoto,
    I’m in Japan.

    Ill find myself

    Misty smoke through the trees,
Brook sparkles in the crystal morn' light,
    I'm off to the mountains.
    Pastures blue,
    Dogwood lily sweet,
    A hare, and a finch,
    To the Appalachian mountains,
Ginger breeze rolls in from far,
scents of pine, ash, oak, and fur,
    they whistle through the leaves,
    This way, to the mountains,
Northwest sun dries the eastern dew,
    colors bloom for spring,
The Valley low hums it's tune:
    Welcome, to the mountains home.

People running around as they were all late to something,
    I’m in New York.
I can hear the music of people’s voices chanting away,
    I’m in New York.
